Tērvete Castle was built
and reconstructed based on archaeological research by E. Brīvkalne between
1951 and 1960 at the Tērvete archaeological complex. The northern wing of the reconstructed
Tērvete Castle corresponds to the third layer of construction on the northern
terrace of the 12th-century wooden castle at Tērvete hillfort.
The wooden castle now
houses the Tērvete History Museum whose collections are presented in exhibition
halls. The museum offers an extensive exhibition that covers the history of
Tērvete and Zemgale from prehistory to the early medieval period. Inside the
castle, visitors can explore Latvia’s largest exhibition of Semigallian
archaeological jewellery and weapons, along with the most notable collection of
reconstructed Semigallian Iron Age jewellery and garments in the country. The
exhibition also includes Iron Age weaponry, everyday household objects, and
ceramics.
