In 2018, three municipalities in Zemgale – Jelgava, Dobele, and Bauska – started implementing a joint cultural and historical heritage restoration project Preservation and Development of Important Cultural and Historic Heritage for the Improvement of Tourist Facilities in Zemgale Region. The project allowed to reconstruct the chapel of the Livonian Order Castle and the territory of the castle courtyard. The reconstructed chapel building was put into operation in 2020, becoming a multi-functional cultural, crafts, and tourism development centre under the designation ‘Dobele Castle’. As of 2021, the Dobele Castle is open to visitors.
