Memorial stone for the departure of the Zemgali people from Dobele

The historical sources suggest that the settlement of the most ancient inhabitants of Dobele, the Semigallians, was located here as early as in the 1st millennium BC. Created by Mārtiņš Zaurs, the commemorative stone was inaugurated in 1989. It reads: ‘Let it be known that the Semigallians left this place 700 years ago being proud and free’ and ‘We are going to a far land but our hearts remain here’ – V. Plūdonis. The ancient city of Dobele is an archaeological monument of national significance.
