The sculptural composition ‘Bundle’ made of granite by sculptor Matiass Jansons was inaugurated in May 2018 near the Penkule Cultural Centre. The monument was put up in memory of the victims of communist genocide. This is the place from where 66 residents of Penkule Parish and its surroundings were deported to Siberia on 25 March 1949. The idea of a ‘bundle’ is based on the story of Astrīds Freimanis who witnessed these painful past events. One image has been burned into his memory – an old lady with a bundle in her trembling hands being seized by soldiers. The plaque on the Culture Centre wall has the names of the deported residents on it.
