The efforts of the fellow-countryman, publicist, writer, and photographer Gunārs Birkmanis made it possible to put up a memorial stone to commemorate the Naudīte School that was burned down in 1944. The memorial stone has a passage from the book The Summer of Broken Fates by Gunārs Birkmanis engraved on it. It reads: ‘This is the road to the West leading to Kurzeme on which the refugees from Sēlija and Zemgale drove and walked for several days in the hope of escaping the Russian oppressors. Many thousands of them never returned to their homes.
