The parents of Kārlis Ulmanis, his foster parents, and other family members are buried in the old Bērze Cemetery by the church. It was also his wish to be buried there. Kārlis Ulmanis expressed his wish in 1939, ‘It is my unchangeable will and wish to be buried at the family cemetery beside our own old church next to my father and mother.’ Unfortunately, he was to remain in a foreign land forever. Since his grave was never found, a memorial plaque was put up at the Bērze Cemetery in the early 1990’s. After all, it was a place Kārlis Ulmanis had chosen as his last resting place.
