Jānis Vītiņš (1897–1941) was not only a great singer but also a brave soldier. In 1921, he was awarded the Lāčplēsis Military Order for heroism in the battles near Bolderāja.
In the 1930’s, Latvian government allocated him the Spārni Hillfort along with the homestead Guntiņas as a reward for heroism in Latvia’s freedom battles. The memorial site was inaugurated on 21 June 2019 in Īle, at the foot of the Spārni Hillfort.
